Recap of First 2 Weeks

Welcome to the first blog of the Junior Men's Development Camp! We have been in Pittsburgh for about two and half weeks and are looking forward to racing at Club Nationals and CanAmMex in Tennessee starting in a week. On a normal day we have two practices (around 7:00 am - 9:30 am and 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm), both of which usually consist of rowing on the water. At the start of camp we primarily worked on technique in 8+ by doing lots of different drills and rowing steady state. Along with water practice, we have done several erg workouts, including 2 x 10 min and two 2k tests.

During the last week, the coaches started seat racing us in order to begin making actual boat lineups. Due to this, our practices have started shifting from steady state rowing to shorter race pieces. For example, the majority of the seat races were 4 and 6 minute pieces in 4+ and today we did 5 x 1K in 8+ at a 34 stroke rating. We are all looking forward to final lineups being set at some point in the near future and getting in some good practices with our boats before we head off to Tennessee.

Seeing as practice only takes up about 6 hours a day, the 43 rowers and coxswains here have some free time during the middle of the day. We spend the majority of this time sleeping, eating, and watching movies (including a Lord of the Rings Marathon!) The coaches have also set up recreational activities during the weekends for us, such as going to a Pirates baseball game and watching fireworks on the 4th of July.
